How to play Sokoban

Read the aim of Sokoban, then make your first move. Push every crate onto a target. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
