How to play Memory Pairs

Take a moment with Memory Pairs before moving to another game. Match all eight pairs. Your result is the number of two-card turns used. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Match all eight pairs. Your result is the number of two-card turns used. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Turn over any face-down card.
  2. Choose a second card. Equal symbols stay visible.
  3. Unequal cards turn back after a short pause.
  4. Continue until every pair is visible.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

Turn over one card, remember its position, then choose a second. A matching pair stays found; a mismatch is hidden again. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

You cannot turn a third card while a mismatched pair is still being shown. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
