How to play Chess Tactics Puzzles

Take a moment with Chess Tactics Puzzles before moving to another game. Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Practise with 64 king-and-queen checkmate positions: 48 mate-in-one puzzles and 16 mate-in-two puzzles. This collection focuses on delivering checkmate.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Force checkmate in the stated number of moves. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Read the mate objective.
  2. Choose a legal attacking move.
  3. The defender replies automatically where another move is required.
  4. Finish the forced mating line.

Controls

Select pieces and targets; use Hint or New puzzle. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

A legal check is wrong when it permits escape from the required mate. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

The objective is forced mate, not merely checking the king. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
