How to play Slitherlink

Read the aim of Slitherlink, then make your first move. Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Ten 4×4 loop puzzles with all cell clues shown.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Draw one closed loop whose edges match the count around every numbered cell. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Click an edge to draw, exclude or clear it.
  2. Count the four edges around each cell.
  3. Do not branch or form separate loops.
  4. Check puzzle verifies every clue and loop connectivity.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A 0 cell has no loop edge around it; a 3 has exactly three. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Several small loops are invalid even if clues match. Check the rule before repeating the action. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
